What are the Five Components of Literacy?
1. Phonemic Awareness:
Phonemic Awareness is the ability to understand that each word is made up of sounds. Students should be able to tell how many sounds are in a word, identify words that rhyme or change words by changing one sound in a word.
2. Phonics:
Phonics is the ability to know which letters make which sounds. Students should be able to decode or sound out words while they read. Students should also be able to spell words based on phonics patterns.
3. Vocabulary:
Vocabulary is the ability to understand what a word means. Students should be able to define words in text or be able to use context clues to determine meaning.
4. Fluency:
Fluency is the ability to read quickly, accurately and with expression.
5. Comprehension:
Comprehension is the ability to understand what is happening in a book, article or any form of text. For example, when students understand a story they can identify and analyze characters, plot and purpose of story. Also, when students understand text, they are able to answer questions before, during and after reading.
